Human Herpes Virus 8 (HHV-8)
Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus, is a member of the subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae that has been associated with all forms of KS, multicentric Castleman’s disease and body cavity-based lymphomas. After infection the virus enters into lymphocytes and remains in a latent state. The prevalence in the Northern hemisphere is only 2% but after 1984 the virus has been found suddenly accumulated with HIV-1 infected persons. HHV-8 can be reactivated like all other human herpes viruses. Standard diagnosis is based on serology. HHV-8 sequences have been detected by PCR in KS lesions, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), breast cancer and prostatic tissue, but also in fluidic specimen (e.g., saliva, semen).
The LightMix® Kit HHV-8 is based on the detection of the latent nuclear antigen ORF73 gene and provides a fast, easy and accurate system to identify and quantify this target in a nucleic acid extract. A control amplification reaction acts as internal control (IC). This kit has been tested on the LightCycler® 1.x / 2.0 / 480 II Instruments with Roche Diagnostics ‘LightCycler® FastStart DNA Master HybProbe’.
